IEE_Medical_Award_2025

The award honours IEE’s pioneering development of a non-invasive foot sensor that enables amputees to regain sensation in their prosthetic limbs, improving mobility, reducing phantom limb pain, and elevating quality of life. This achievement highlights IEE’s leadership in engineering patient-centered medical solutions and marks a significant advancement in the field of healthcare technology.

Luxembourg, October 8, 2025 – IEE S.A., a global leader in sensing technology, is proud to announce it has been awarded the prestigious 1st Prize for Medical Innovation 2025 at Healthcare Week Luxembourg 2025. The jury recognized IEE’s groundbreaking achievement in the development of advanced sensory feedback prosthetics—technology with the power to transform patient outcomes for amputees across Europe.

Addrescsing a critical medical need

IEE’s innovation tackles a core challenge in prosthetic care: the lack of natural sensory feedback experienced by lower and upper limb amputees, resulting in instability, restricted mobility, and phantom limb pain for millions. Through engineering excellence, IEE developed a highly specific and robust foot sensor able to withstand daily mechanical stress while delivering real-time precision feedback. This technology became a key enabler of Suralis, the world’s first non-invasive sensory feedback prosthetic system from Saphenus Medical Technology.

Medical breakthrough in sensory feedback and pain relief

IEE’s Smart Foot sensor is a milestone in prosthetic technology: it captures rolling motion and pressure points, and transmits the data to a vibrotactile actuator, which, in turn, stimulates redirected nerves in the amputee’s residual limb. This enables users to feel their heel-to-toe gait cycle—mirroring natural walking and reducing the risk of falls. The approach draws on Nobel Prize-backed research in neuroreceptors, proven to promote brain reorganization and reduce persistent phantom limb pain.

Rapid path from concept to clinic

IEE designed its sensor for easy, non-invasive integration with existing prosthetics, ensuring broad and rapid adoption. The Suralis system powered by IEE is now clinically approved and reimbursed in several European countries, including Germany, Austria, and Italy, already helping patients improve mobility and relieve pain.

Driving interdisciplinary collaboration

IEE’s achievement is the result of close partnerships across medical technology, orthopedics, biomechanics, and industrial design. Through cross-functional teamwork, IEE delivered a sensor solution performing reliably for millions of gait cycles—setting a new standard for sensory feedback in prosthetic applications.

This innovation not only redefines prosthetic care today but also lays the foundation for addressing broader neurological conditions in the future, including diabetic neuropathy.

Transforming lives through engineering innovation

IEE’s Smart Foot sensor shows how cutting-edge engineering can reshape modern medicine. By targeting a specific unmet need, enabling neurobiological breakthroughs, and exemplifying cross-industry collaboration, IEE has made a lasting, measurable impact on patient care.

Winning the Medical Innovation 2025 prize is a tremendous honor for our entire SmartHealth team at IEE. It affirms our commitment to developing sensor technology that reshapes patient care, and it inspires us to push further in bringing sensation back to those who need it most.

Alain Schons, Team Manager SmartHealth

This award is a testament not only to our technical innovation, but to the real-world impact we’re achieving for amputees. With the Smart Foot sensor, we’ve opened up new possibilities for mobility and quality of life, and I am immensely proud to see our work recognized at such a high level.

Tobias Meyer, Business Development Manager SmartHealth

Being part of a project that unlocks sensation and relief for amputees is a privilege, and receiving this recognition alongside IEE is truly rewarding. The Suralis system represents what can be achieved when medical and engineering expertise join forces to change lives.
